Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Deaconess Family Medicine Residency believes that a diverse and culturally competent healthcare workforce is essential in addressing health disparities.

A team of residents, faculty, and staff created the DFMR Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee. Through the work of this committee, we are working on several areas including
  • Curricular changes
    • 4 week community health rotation that includes experiences with local organizations/public health and advocacy for health issues
    • Development of longitudinal community-oriented primary care projects that partner resident physicians with Evansville community organizations
    • A longitudinal didactic curriculum focused on social determinants of health and implicit bias
    • Quality improvement projects with a focus on social determinants of health
    • Outreach clinic experience at Deaconess Clinic Memorial focused on underserved populations
  • Departmental training sessions, form/policy review, and celebration and recognition of cultural diversity
  • Expansion of services such as medication-assisted treatment and gender-affirming hormone therapy to better meet the needs of our local underserved population
  • Ongoing engagement with Echo Community Healthcare (Federally Qualified Health Center) for obstetrics and gynecology services with focus on immigrant populations
  • Increased partnerships with local schools and colleges/universities for students interested in careers in health professions
  • Developing longitudinal relationships with chapters of SNMA and creating additional medical student rotation connections
