Pretesting
Pretesting is different for every surgery. The testing specific to you and your procedure will be completed through a phone call or scheduled pre-op appointment with a nurse. During this time, you will be asked about your medical history and medications. You will also be given instructions on what to do and not do before your surgery.
If you need to cancel or reschedule your surgery, please call your surgeon’s office.
Day of Surgery
Generally, you will arrive 2 hours before your scheduled surgery time, unless told otherwise by your doctor. This allows us plenty of time to prepare you for surgery. You will be asked to put on a hospital gown, sign consent forms and have your vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, etc.) checked while in the pre-op area. The nurse will also start you on IV fluids at this time.
You may have one family member accompany you during this time and once you are ready, others may join you. Your anesthesiologist and surgery nurse will both talk with you before your surgery.
In the Operating Room
You will walk to the operating room with your surgery nurse. If you need assistance, we do have wheelchairs available. Your family will be directed to the waiting area until your surgery is complete. Vital sign monitors (for blood pressure, temperature, etc.) will be placed on you and you will be made as comfortable as possible before your anesthesia is given.
Your surgeon will meet with your family in a private room after your procedure.
Recovery
Immediately after your surgery, you will be transferred to recovery. Here, our staff will continue to monitor your vital signs. Average recovery time is one hour. Family members will be asked to wait in the surgery waiting area until the end of your recovery period.
Discharge
If you will be going home directly after your procedure, you need to meet certain requirements before leaving. You must be able to walk, drink liquids, and have a tolerable comfort level.
You will receive written discharge instructions including prescriptions, follow-up appointments and special education regarding your surgery. Your family will be able to accompany you during this time. We ask that you have a responsible adult drive you home.
If you will be staying overnight, your family will be escorted to your room if it is available. After your time in recovery, you will be taken to your private room.
If you have an outpatient procedure and go home from the recovery room, a member of our staff will contact you by phone the next day to check on your progress. If you need urgent care prior to this, call your surgeon’s office. If it is after hours, you will get an answering service who will contact a surgeon on call. You may be instructed to report to The Women’s Hospital
Emergency Department.
