Community & Education

Community Education Programs
Suicide prevention, awareness, and education
Deaconess Cross Pointe offers suicide awareness and education programs for community members from teens through adults. Programs are offered at no cost as a community service.

Question, Persuade & Refer (QPR)
QPR suicide awareness and prevention training is designed for those who find themselves in a position to help someone who may be considering suicide. QPR consists of 3 life-saving skills:

Question…a person about suicide
Persuade…the person to get help
Refer…the person to appropriate resources

QPR can be provided in any room, office or classroom setting.

Yellow Ribbon
The Yellow Ribbon Adolescent Suicide Prevention Awareness and Education Program is a non-threatening suicide prevention training program. Its success and effectiveness lie in its “comprehensive simplicity.” Nearly any young person or adult can understand and follow the “first aid” techniques shown. Those skills enable the trained person to provide appropriate support until professionals arrive.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
ASIST is a two-day suicide intervention workshop that provides practical training for caregivers seeking to prevent suicide. The emphasis of the ASIST workshop is on suicide first-aid and helping a person at risk stay safe and seek further help.

Participants will learn how to:
  • Recognize an invitation for help
  • Reach and offer support
  • Review the risk of suicide
  • Apply a suicide intervention model
  • Link people with community resources
Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR)
AMSR is a one-day workshop for mental health professionals on assessing suicide risk, planning treatment, and managing the ongoing care of the at-risk client.

Participants will be able to:
  • Demonstrate attitudes and approaches to more effectively work with individuals at risk of suicide.
  • Elicit accurate information regarding suicide ideation, behavior, plans, and intent.
  • Make a clinical judgment of the risk that a client will attempt or complete suicide in the short and long term.
  • Develop a collaborative crisis response plan and a written treatment and services plan.
  • Develop policies and procedures for following clients closely.
Participants of past workshops report increased competence and confidence in assessing and managing suicide risk through knowledge gain and skill acquisition. Participants also leave the workshop with specific ideas about improvements they will make in their clinical practices.

HOPE Team
The mission of the HOPE Team is to reduce suicides and suicide attempts by educating people about suicide and providing support to those affected by suicidal thoughts and suicide. The HOPE Team provides bereavement service that is specific to suicide. Additionally, our team provides service to other sudden or traumatic deaths.

The HOPE Team serves people who are impacted by completed and attempted suicides. Law enforcement or a local community authority activates the HOPE Team, and our team responds to the scene or a safe environment once there is a determination the death is due to suicide. The HOPE Team also makes advocacy visits to families and friends who have lost a loved one, friend, or colleague to suicide.
