    Fun and Safety with ATVs

Lu Weil, Injury Prevention Coordinator Injury Prevention Coordinator, Deaconess Regional Trauma Center 06/02/2017

The first week of June is ATV Safety Week. Sadly, 90% of all ATV-related fatalities could be prevented, as they are the result of behaviors that are warned about, such as children riding on adult-sized ATVs.

Here are some life-saving tips about ATVs.

    The ATV Safety Rules

    • Helmets save lives. Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet. Always.
    • Wear protective clothing such as goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.
    • Never ride on paved roads except to cross. ATVs are designed to be operated off-road.
    • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
    • Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.
    • Ride an ATV that’s right for your age. Children should never ride an adult-sized ATV.
    • Supervise riders younger than 16. ATVs are not toys.
    • Ride only on designed trails and at a safe speed.

When the appropriate precautions are taken, riding an ATV can be fun. But don’t let a little bit of fun become a lifetime of debility – or even death. Be safe. And above all, when it comes to ATVs, remember that HELMETS SAVE LIVES. #helmetssavelives
