Deaconess ranks first in Indiana for Pulmonary Care and Stroke Care, and is among the top 100 hospitals in the nation for this care in 2023, according to a new analysis released by Healthgrades, the leading resource connecting doctors and patients. Additionally, Deaconess is ranked #2 in Indiana for Critical Care and #3 in Indiana for Gastrointestinal Surgery in 2023.

For a fourth year in a row, Deaconess was also named among America’s 250 Best Hospitals, placing the organization’s hospital-based care among the top 5% in the nation. Deaconess is also the only hospital in Indiana to receive this ranking for four consecutive years.

In addition to the overall hospital ranking, Deaconess received the following specialty-related hospital rankings from Healthgrades:
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care – 4 years in a row
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care – 3 years in a row
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Prostate Surgeries – first-time award
“This fourth-time award is further evidence of the dedication to exceptional patient care that is shown by Deaconess physicians, clinical staff and employees throughout the organization,” said Shawn McCoy, CEO, Deaconess Health System. “Our talented and committed employees continue to keep quality patient care at the top of our priorities, while we continue to expand access to services throughout the tri-state region.”

"Being ranked #1 in Indiana for Stroke and Pulmonary Care is a testament to Deaconess’s continued commitment to top-quality care. Hospitals receiving a #1 ranking in their state have a proven track record of delivering superior outcomes for the patients in their community," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science, Healthgrades. “For almost 25 years, our mission has been to provide consumers with clear and accessible information to make more informed healthcare decisions. Patients can feel confident knowing that they have access to #1 ranked care for Stroke and Pulmonary Care at Deaconess.”

“Because we are a local organization, our employees and leadership team live here, and have families here,” said McCoy. “These awards, now achieved multiple years in a row, are a reflection of our commitment to providing the highest quality care right here, in our community and throughout the tristate.”

For the state ranking analysis, Healthgrades evaluated clinical performance for nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide, focusing on eighteen key specialties across a mix of chronic, urgent, and surgical specialty areas. In addition, Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top performing hospitals. This year’s analysis revealed significant variation between America’s Best 250vHospitals and hospitals that did not receive the distinction. In fact, if all hospitals performed similarly to America’s 250 Best, over 160,000 lives could have been saved.* For example, patients treated at one of the 2023 America’s 250 Best Hospitals have, on average, a 28.7% lower risk of dying than if they were treated at a hospital that did not receive the America’s 250 Best Hospitals award.*”
